100% CATALAN DESIGNcommissioner: Raquel PeltaIf we look at the history trying to find traces of the Catalan graphic editorial tradition previous to the 20th century, we can state that this is very old, since we will find copies previous to the invention of the printing. In spite of everything, it will be, as result not only of the Industrial Revolution but also of an awareness with regard to the national identity itself, from the middle of the 19th century when it starts to find a force that will convert it in one of the most shining examples of the Spanish State as well as of the international panorama. Recognized by its impulse and quality, the graphic design has kept being developed in an area rich and conscious of its value, not only as a tool of business development but also as part of a culture without which it is not understood, but that, can not be understood at the same time without it. Culture and design form then, a couple, with some strong indissoluble links. This exhibition intends to reflect this close relation in an area specially favorable to it: the editorial. As exhibition represented of publishing companies to the exhibition we can find Espasa, Lumen, Edicions 62, Seix Barral or Gustavo Gili. The choice of the parts that are exhibited has not been simple, since it has been marked not only by its signification but also by the characteristics of the exhibition room and the wide public to whom this exhibition is addressed. It does not have historical vocation, for the oldest works that they find intend to act as referent to help understand the evolution of a graph that at present is shown perfectly integrated to the most advanced international currents. Most of the works do not stand out only for its design but also for some contents that prove the Catalan cultural wealth in its different varieties. That's why, those that show an important activity in fields as different as the architecture, the art, the theater, the dance or the design itself have been selected, besides books and related magazines with the world of the literature. In the exhibition we will find creations of designers as Mario Eskenazi, Pepe Gimeno, Daniel Giralt-Miracle, Cristina Lladó or Claret Serrahima, and illustrators as recognized as Miró, Tąpies or Brossa. |
