YEAR OF DESIGN 2003commissioner: Joan Vinyets - Òscar GuayaberoThe Design: A cultural and economic reality * The design is one of more significant cultural contributions of the 20th century. A cultural fact and expression typical of the contemporary society and that is present in our lives, cities and everyday surroundings. A complex discipline, a coin with two sides, that also includes and industrial and economic reality. Do to its integrating character and its many economic, cultural, technological or ecological, etc. implications, the discipline of the design has become -in the most advanced societies- one of the epicenters of the reflection and debate on what our future should look like. Together with other disciplines it is part what Herber Simon called sciences of the artificial, sharing the responsibility to contemplate the complexity of the contemporary world, to face its changes and to give shape to its future. The ideology of the industrial revolution, dominating by the paradigm of the scientific-technical progress, has to establish the convention that science discovers and modifies our way to observe the world, while the technology applies and changes our way to life the world, and now we can also confirm that design helps us to life better in the world, joining what’s technologically possible with what’s cultural acceptable. Although the design allows to imagine in a creative way various possible futures options, its responsibility is to always bear in mind the social, environmental, technological, economic and cultural efficiency. This way, and do its role and implications we can say that it makes sense to talk about the Year of Design exactly because of this integrating and ample impact on various sectors of the cultural, social and economic life. *fragment of the text of the guide of the Year of Design written by Joan Vinyets. |
